Waaay back, even before Ra found her, Phaithe was a young, but skilled thief that drew the attention of a manipulative wizard. The wizard cast a spell on Phaithe, telling her that he had stolen her soul and placed it in a small gemstone. What he had really done, was cast an enchantment that robbed her of all emotion, and the gemstone was the enchantment's focus. Desperate to get her "soul" back, Phaithe served as the wizard's assassin for many years. When Ra arrived, the demon lord offered to give Phaithe her soul back in exchange for her service as a Minion. Once the bargain was struck, Ra killed the wizard and handed the gemstone to Phaithe. She carried that stone with her for ages, thinking it her soul and not the arcane device keeping her emotions banished.
D'kan recognized the spell almost immediately and destroyed the gemstone, thus freeing Phaithe to feel again, for the first time in thousands of years...

Must be hard to have all that emotion come rushing back after all they had done.

Extremely! That's why she seems somewhat child-like now. She's pretty much starting over from scratch when it comes to her emotional growth.
Oh man that is deep.

It's true. Belemon truly believed he didn't have the right to change her so completely. The paradox was, in her emotionless state, Phaithe was barely more than an automaton and would never be able to make that choice for herself.
